If you're driving west into LAX and the freeway is slow - can you get off and take surface streets into LAX? If there is a way to do this that saves time, where can you get off?

Give us an idea of where you are driving from. It's possible to take surface streets entirely anywhere in the El A region, but something you might have to go through sketchy areas. But tell use your starting location first.

Century Blvd west will take you right into LAX, but sometimes that gets congested also.

I live 10 minutes south of LAX. We just take Sepulveda to the airport.

I'm driving south on the 110 to the 105.

you can get off the 110 or 105 and take Imperial Hwy or Century Blvd to LAX. As someone else mentioned, Century goes right into the terminals. Imperial runs just south of the airport, but you can take sepulveda under the runway and enter the airport near century. on the north side of the airport is manchester, which also hits sepulveda.

If you're coming from DTLA and you're traveling yourself, there's the Fly Away shuttle bus from Union Station.

Other than that, we need more information.

From the north, as the OP, take La Brea to Stocker to La Cienega to La Tijera. Always reliable and moves well enough. From the east, take the Green Line. From various other points get to Union Station via train and then take the LAX Flyaway with 24/7 service.

As much as I usually like to encourage the use of Metrorail, I don't think anyone at Metro has thought the concept of steel wheels to the airport completely through. Besides the fact you still have to take a shuttle bus from Aviation Station to LAX, none of the trains provide room for much luggage beyond a purse or computer bag. There aren't any overhead racks or vestibule storage areas for luggage, and the Blue Line, which, based on your OP, you'd be taking to reach the Green Line, can be jam-packed at times.

I'll just say this. If you get off the 105 and decide to take Imperial you are going through gang territory. If you went east by mistake you will be smack in the middle of the Jordan Downs projects. No telling what would happen if you got lost around there and stuck there. Proceeding west you still need to be super cautious of your surroundings.

What I would do is just plan to go earlier and not take surface streets. Stay on the 105.

OR you could get off the 110 around USC at Exposition, then drive west to LaBrea. Then as another poster suggested take the La Brea to Stocker to La Cienega to La Tijera route. This is a much safer surface street route versus cruising along Imperial Highway.
