Hey all,

I'm a huge walker and I love to hike...anywhere to do that in the LA area? I'm sure there is, but I've no idea where to look!

Thanks!

Griffith park has some really nice hiking trails.

One of my favorites is in Glendale where there is a pretty nice trail that leads from Brand Park all the way to the top of the Glendale (hills/mountains).

Another good one is at the end of Reseda blvd in Tarzana there are several really nice trails there as well. Malibu hills and Malibu campgrounds have some good trails also.

You may want to look into this book I think its called "Hiking Southern California". It gives details and locations of miles and miles of hiking trails in Los Angeles. Do a search on Amazon it should come up.

Sycamore Canyon

Boney Mountain, Sandstone Peak Backbone Trail

There's the easy way (from Circle X Ranch) and the hard way (from Newbury Park). I've only climbed Boney Mountain (3111 feet, highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains) the easy way, about 1.5 to 2 miles, moderate grade. Sign the log book at the top. Also try Mugu Peak near Point Mugu. It is straight up. Used to hike it at lunchtime.

Another good hike, is up to Mt San Gorgonio (11,506 feet), the highest point in Southern California. Did that a few years ago. Be careful, lighting is really bad up there in summer - dangerous. On our way up we met a chick on her way down from a day hike who had to spend the night in some dude's tent because she got stuck up there in a lightning storm. You can see Palm Springs and the Riverside/San Bernardino area from up there.

I used to do the Inspiration Point hike in Will Rogers Park when I lived in LA. It's off Sunset Blvd. near UCLA and a great view at the top!

My gosh, one of the best things about living in the L.A. area is the hiking. I can't speak much to urban hiking, such as Lake Balboa, Griffith Park or similar areas, but on the periphery there are some great areas to hike:

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area - Areaparks.com
Parks | LAMountains.com - Rocky Peak Park (Simi-Chatsworth)
Parks | LAMountains.com - Antonovich Regional Park
Parks | LAMountains.com - Pico Canyon (Santa Clarita Valley)
Chatsworth Park
Oat Mountain - Chatsworth - Bike Site - Mountain Bike Trails, Bicycle Information for - Bike Shops in - MyBikeSite.com
LocalHikes - Big Tujunga to Colby Canyon

PS. Bring water, fresh fruit and sandwiches.
