I'v lived in Southern California all my life. I know Greater Los Angeles very well. Have any of you ever driven from Oxnard all the way down to Ensenada? If you have you would know it is all one enourmous dense never ending sprawl, with pockets of modern developing urban cores (Irvine, Anahiem, Long Beach , Santa Ana). Back when LA had the streets cars it had already sprawled into the Inland Empire long ago. With San Bernardino/Riverside having the 15 freeway slice through their region connecting San Diego with Las Vegas, it has resulted in a housing boom along the 15, creating a long sprawl between the hills of San Diego county and Riverside county by Temecula. Can we say Southern California and Baja will be labeled into this merged region that is all connected by freeways, high speed rail, airports. We already have the world's biggest border crossing, and alot of business is interconnected throughout southern california.

Indeed. Expect the LA Region to become not only the largest region in the US (Surpassing Metro NY) but the world (Surpassing Tokyo) by 2050. Expect a population of 40 million with LA Region being extended from Riverside to NV / AZ border areas. There is plenty of open land favoring LA's expansion. Expect LA to be King of US - sprawling from Oxnard to NV / AZ border to Southern San Diego around 2050.

So Camp Pendleton is moving soon, by 2050?

I would hope not. Even if Camp Pendleton were ever to be decommissioned, it could be designated as an open space buffer between Orange County and Metro San Diego.

Sure, one giant crime infested slum with open corruption and cartel turf wars.

What sci-fi movie have you been watching?

Blade Runner, except less cool-looking buildings and no flying cars

HSR like Jerry Brown's Moonbeam Express? Extremely remote chance since no one will use it, on top of the fact that the IE is growing in population faster than LA or OC and figures to do for years to come.

Folks are leaving the state much faster than they are arriving, so when you combine a below-replacement birth rate with a rapidly aging population, things aren't looking too good in the state which inexcusably has the nation's highest poverty rste thanks to liberal policies and decimated construction and manufacturing industries with no chance of either coming back to life, which certainly explains why Toyota is leaving much to the indifference of Brown and his ilk.

I've never understood this desire some people have for Los Angeles to expand, yet at the same time we're expected to conserve water and "go green", which becomes more difficult to do with time if the population is expanding.

Not really, since well over half of the entire region is made up of suburban bedroom communities. Not much crime on the streets if most people aren't even walking on the streets.

I wonder what will happen to all the densepack now being put in to appeal to people who want to be close in but can't afford an SHF (or don't want to drive)?

We are getting these up here as well.

The math works now, but in the 2030s? Maybe not so much ...
