When it comes to the congested streets of LA, it appears automobiles outnumber motorcycles 100:1 (super scientific calculation). With lane-splitting being legal and motorcycles being allowed in car pool lanes, I can't help but wonder why that is. Are there prohibitive parking regulations I'm just not aware of? What's the deal?

Just wondering what you guys think....

clearly you are not a motorcyclist.

motorcycling in LA is EXTREMELY dangerous. so many inattentive drivers, aggressive driving, bad pavement, etc. If you want to commute at rush hour by motorcycle you have to have serious skills and willingness to take serious risks.

I just served on a jury in a case involving a fatal motorcycle crash. Maybe that will help to answer your question.

It's the motorcycle drivers that are aggressive and inattentive. But they end up paying the ultimate price.

How about the motorcyclists who ride in between cars? I know they're allowed to do this, but it's crazy.

I also see them cutting in and out when traffic is moving just fine.

Serious risks? You should ride a motorcycle with the assumption that everyone is out to kill you. Bikers like that tend to live longer.

Same thing with these bicyclists. It amazes me when I see them riding, with earbuds in, never looking around to see what is coming up behind them. Some of them even text. Just assuming the cars see them, or going for leisure rides in congested areas at peak travel times....brilliant.

It is dangerous but mostly because of inattenative drivers. Almost anywhere you go in the world, motorcyclist are allowed to lane split. It is a major advantage of having a motorcycle.

More states should be like CA

Because the rest of the world is so great! We should start copying them more! Soon the streets of LA will look like Vietnam.

I am an active CCS supersport racer. Riding a motorcycle on the street dangerous no matter where you are.

This happens everywhere, though.

Let's get back on topic. WHY are there not more motorcyclists in LA? Most major metros have an abundance of motorcyclists due to the ease of travel, parking. Is the entire LA population so risk-adverse that it simply keeps motorcyclists off the street? There has to be components that I'm missing!

I drove a motorcycle for over 2000 miles in Vietnam. It is truly is crazy over there, but it is an organized chaos.

Chicago: 8 miles wide, 22 miles long
Manhattan: 2.5 miles wide, 13.5 miles long
San Francisco: 7 miles wide, 7 miles long
Boston: same as San Francisco
Washington: barely bigger

In Los Angeles, these distances barely get you anywhere. It's tiring to ride long distances on a motorcycle. Plus, it's hard to eat, put on makeup or text on one
