All this talk about race has me very intrigued on this subject. If this was once such a white bastion, where do all the white people live now? Did they move to different parts of SoCal? Have they left California? Is Los Angeles more income based vs race-based? Although, then one can ask, why is there still such ethnic diversity and income disparity in the city?

We only live on the nicest beaches, right on the water. Or those big houses on the hills.

Was this a white bastion? History tells me that Mexicans were here first and then whites and chinese showed up around the same time during the gold rush. And of course we all kicked out the natives

Some moved to other parts of SoCal or CA and others moved out of state.

There are still quite a few areas of L.A that have mostly white residents.
Keep in mind there is diversity within the white/caucasian demographic too.

Persians are considered caucasian for example for demographics, but many commonly don't view them as white.
You also have a lot of people that are of mixed race or ethnicity too. White/Hispanic , White/Asian/ , White/Black ,etc
Are they 'white'?

This is just from my own experience, but it seems that hispanics are more likely to live closer to family. If they go to college they will likely stay within the SoCal area or CA.
If they can't afford in L.A, they'll often move further out to Antelope Valley or further out to San Bernardino County rather than move out of state.

More non whites are getting college degrees versus in the past so things are changing and will change income wise.

L.A is a big city and appeals to a lot of different people.
Rent control also has a pretty strong impact on keeping people in L.A too.

For many nationalities , L.A has the largest amount of people from their home country outside of their home country.

People generally like to be within their comfort zone. When I've left L.A to visit other places it's often strange to not see that diversity.

I remember on a trip to Pittsburgh wondering where all the hispanic people were. Turns out the hispanic population was about 2%. Had a guy working at the hotel mentioning about "Mexican people moving in next to his sister's house"..

In Pittsburgh it's mostly Black or White.

There are many more options in the U.S now though for minorities, Houston for example is over 37% hispanic and it's a very big city.

Demographics is an interesting thing and why people move certain places.

Times change. I was looking up my elementary school in MA. I was there in the 80s, it was a great school and we had probably 5 non white kids total in K-6. The school is now rated 3/10 on greatschools and apparently it's about 95% non white and non native english speakers now
