So the NorCal vs SoCal thread in Sacramento has inspired this for me. NorCal was described as being more intellectual, "granola", cultured, etc.

What are the intellectual areas of the Southland? Claremont?

I personally don't think intellectual and "granola" go hand in hand. So I'm not going to comment on the "granola" aspect.

The most intellectual area would be Pasadena the area, bar none, because it's primary employers are Colleges, Hospitals, and Engineering firms. Caltech, JPL, PCC, Art Center, Huntington Hospital, Kaiser, Las Encinas, USC/County [I know it's not in Pasadena, but I can assure you the MDs are not living in Boyle Heights], Parsons, Jacobs, Tetratech.

To me that would be DTLA, Silverlake, and Los Feliz.

Yeah I guess one would have to define what intellectual means.

If you mean a bunch of underemployed baristas discussing Proust while trying to peddle their next movie script, or intellectual meaning scientists, professors, and engineers.

There's also a huge tech scene in Silicon Beach so that would be another possible area.

Brentwood, Bel Air/Holmby Hills, and Beverly Hills.

Those 3 areas have a lot of older, intellectual wealth. Some not so wealthy but were comfortable academics (UCLA Professors, writers, researchers) who bought their homes decades ago.

A few wealthy oldtimers surrounded by celebrities and fuerdai with more money than brain cells. Not many cultural institutions in those areas, either.

I'd say Pasadena and Los Feliz myself.

Quite.

Good point, I forgot all the museums/art institutions in Pasadena.

Norton Simon, Huntington (adjacent), Pacific Asia, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Armory Center for the Arts.

There are no longer any intellectual areas on the westside.

What defines an intellectual area? A lot of UCLA professors, doctors, scientists live in Brentwood and Bel Air. There's world class research in the Westwood/West LA area.

And UCI is in Irvine, but that sure doesn't make it an intellectual area.
