Should renters just be allowed to live somewhere forever?

The residents will be paid $19,700 per unit and the residents have the option to move back in at the same rental rate after the company completes a $50 million renovation ?

But this company (Watermark) is greedy ?

This isn't a facility that provides any health care options or has nurses .

----

LOS ANGELES - As part of a fight to stop dozens of seniors from being evicted from their Westwood retirement home, the Los Angeles City Council is scheduled to vote today on a motion that seeks to designate the facility a residential hotel.

Watermark wants to complete a $50 million renovation and convert the building into a residential care facility with assisted living. The current facility is unlicensed and does not provide health care options.

The residents can move back in at the same rental rate, Watermark has said, and residents will also be paid up to $19,700 per unit for moving costs -- an amount required under the Rent Stabilization Act.

Koretz has been scathing in his criticism of Watermark, calling it a "greedy corporation." He also started a pressure campaign in December by publicly releasing the names and contact information of Watermark's top executives and asking supporters to "pressure these faceless, heartless wheeler-dealers by calling, emailing and mailing to express your outrage."

LA City Council motion would try to keep Westwood seniors in their retirement home

Many of these people are in their 80s and 90s, have a little heart. Some of them are even WW2 vets. I think the least they could have is a decent place to live where they're happy in their final years.

You think someone that age wants to move out, than move back in? How long are the "renovations" going to take? Probably long enough to ensure some of these folks won't be around.

Yes, this company is greedy.

Good for Paul Koretz!

Yes but...

How do you renovate a place that has people in it who will always be aging? Just stop renting it to everyone and wait until the current occupants die? That doesn't seem like a good option and could take 20+ years. Renovate around them? I don't think that can work with power and water getting shut off.

Face it, at some point someone is going to have to be put out for awhile no matter how you slice it.

Have you followed this story at all on the news?

Again, the majority of these people are in their 80s and 90s, so none of them will be around in 20 years.

In fact if you waited even less than 5 years most of them will be gone. These aren't people who just turned 65.

All of a sudden it needs to renovated? That's the excuse to get them out, the corporation knows damn well once they're out, they won't be coming back.

Tired of greed.

And you and anyone else who feel this way are free to provide that.

These folks live in westwood, it is a good bet they are wealthy or at the least very well off. It is not a nursing or care facility so they likely are taking care of themselves. Koretz, the scum sucker that he is, is trying to paint a picture of these people as being doddering old folks when they are likely not.

I just seems crazy to think someone can live in someone's else's property forever.
If you want to guarantee that you never have to move then you have to purchase your own place .

I'm willing to bet that it was mentioned in the lease too about the possibility of having to move if renovations are made .

Koretz wants to act like a big hero for the senior citizens in the area so they vote for him by making an "example" of these "greedy landlords"

I'm sure similar things happen in NYC too though
