Is there in LA an area with such a busy nightlife and such a large amount of people hopping from bar to bar?

Old town Pasadena though not on as large a scale as gaslamp.

Downtown LA as well, esp Friday and Saturday nights. Things are a bit spread out though so Uber may be in order depending on exactly what you are trying to do, but you can just walk as well.

3rd Street Santa Monica, Abbott Kinney, Marina Del Rey. Santa Monica Pier has a lot of people, but they aren't bar hopping, mainly catching Pokemon with wires hanging out of their pockets.

with the exception of the pier, all those areas are pretty dead after 11 pm.

For a lively scene after 11 pm with so much walkability... only the Hollywood and Highland area and the strip of Santa Monica Blvd bars between Robertson and Hancock come to mind. (also Robertson Blvd between melrose and SM)

Gas lamp district is a cool area .
Things are pretty spread out in la with more mini nightlife .
I'd say Hollywood highland might be the closest but it's still a different vibe from gaslamp in SD

Westwood village seems like it used to be like that way back
When I was younger Sunset Strip was like that with a lot of people walking around . Now things are much more quiet.

Much of the reason it's quieter is because of neighborhood groups that didn't want such a rowdy party scene .

No, there's nothing really of this scale in LA. During a special event, sure...but not consistently.

Areas you might like: West Hollywood, Hollywood/Vine, downtown Santa Monica, and the Sunset Strip.

Partying in LA is different than partying elsewhere. There's 10M people in region so you can find just about any type of vibe you want...but people in LA tend to stick to a singular location for the night, have more of a "VIP" experience, and gravitate towards bars that require nicer attire. Dinner parties are a big thing as well--whether it be at a restaurant or at someone's home.
