I empathize with that mentality to some extent, but only for one situation: If their family has been in the LA area for generations. They're not going to want to move away from them. The conveniences of being able to have their parents babysit, have Uncle Bob fix their alternator, have cousin Jimmy help them move...I get it. It's just an easier life and they're used to it.

...but it's 2017. Everyone has access to FaceTime/Skype. There are many modes of (relatively) inexpensive transportation to help you get back when you want to. Childcare is quite a bit more affordable outside of CA. You can replace your Uncle Bob with Yelp .

As an LA transplant with 6 generations of family based in Brew City WI, I consider myself a case and point. I just happen to move INTO the high COL.

Yeah I think most people want to stay for family and friends versus a job .
Of course someone with a great high paying job or business in L.A won't even need to consider moving because they make enough .

I do agree moving is easier said than done .

I've lived in Santa Monica for 30 years. I don't recall ever seeing anyone who looked Arab. Oh, I might have missed a few. But there can't be "plenty" of Arabs in SM, much less Saudis specifically.

Yes, I see all those houses going up north of Montana. But I don't ever recall seeing a sign that said, This House Is Being Built With Saudi Money.

Yeah I don't think of SM being much of a Saudi or Middle Eastern area . That's more Beverly Hills , Westwood , etc .

I know you're purposefully exaggerating for effect, but cross the 405 and you'll see what the poster is talking about. BH, the west parts of WeHo, even south of Ventura in Sherman Oaks all have a solid presence of Saudi's. The ones I've bumped into have been mostly entitled brats...with some pleasantness sprinkled here and there.

Sorry; I have no idea what an AL/NH is. I was the executor of my father's trust, but have no clue what your abbreviations mean.

How nice for you. I never said it didn't happen; I said that no one I know had inherited one directly from their parents.

Then you're mistaken.

Who ever said that? I know plenty of people who sold the home to pay off medical bills. "Silly"? No; necessary, yes.

You seem really upset that not everyone has the same experience that you do.

If a will/trust is done by an attorney who is any good, than there shouldn't be all those "misunderstandings".

An AL is assisted living, an NH is a nursing home. Odd you don't know that since you talk so much about elderly people, medicals bills, needing care, etc.

Not upset at all, I just don't find it believable to be quite honest. You have lived in CA for decades and don't know one person who inherited a house when they're parents passed. No one on your street, or a coworkers, odd.

No, I'm not mistaken, you constantly bash CA on other boards, You have never lived in FL(I have) and you
seem to think it's paradise, that's your right, spend time there from April to October for a few months and see how wonderful it is. But you do most certainly bash CA on a regular basis.

I love my apt complex in SM and I got in here 25 yrs ago with the great RC...so many good friends here who are helpful to one another, if one needs some help. Within reason.

Many spend hours on the freeways to commute to work and then back to their cheaper $300-500K homes in redlands or wherever. Get nice apt closer to work and learn to enjoy it and the freedom from the roads of crazy drivers and traffic. A married couple with 2 salaries can do this very nicely, and a single person with a GOOD income can do it alone. Many do find larger apts and get a quality room mate to share. Just thinking.

Our building of 13 apts and 3 that just came up as people had to move for jobs and one gal's father died in S.D. and she had to go down there to work on all that. My bldg is older and in a prime spot walking distance to the beach. Rents are not that terrible considering this area. If you want to know more DM me and I'll give you manager's #.
The American Dream is what again? Isn't it different for whoever is doing the dreaming?

If you see it as home ownership, sure it's hard to get a home in PRIME, desirable areas, but still not impossible. Buying in some regular burb? Almost easy if you aren't lazy.

Remember many people moved to CA at one time or another and left other family behind. This is not uncommon today. This is many times the result of going to a College out of State. They get a nice degree and move where there is work or with a new partner/husband/wife and then one of them moves away from family with the other.

Yeah true . The population of L.A was tiny in the early 1900s , when compared to New York for example at the time .
Population in 1900 was 102,479
It was 319,198 just 10 years later in 1910

That's explosive growth and it didn't just come from new births of people already here of course .

Really amazing how fast la did grow population wise in the early part of the 20th century .

To put in in perspective the population from 2000 to 2010 only went up 100,000

County Population 1850-2010 for Los Angeles County, California

In 1900 L.A didn't even make the top 20 largest cities . Who would of thought back then that L.A would have a larger population than Chicago one day .

I'm at an age (late 40s) where most people my age were able to buy their own house anywhere up to 20 years ago when prices were lower, and still mostly have at least one parent living in the old family house.

I do know several who have inherited houses, but they were already homeowners. They either moved to the new house and sold the old one, or stayed where they were and sold the inheritance. Surprisingly, none has seemed interested in keeping both properties and renting one, though that seems like the way to go to me.

Most everyone I knew who was just renting in SoCal has moved away. They had no hope of buying a house here and didn't want to keep renting forever, so they went to lower COL areas. Maybe they'd come back if they inherited a property.
