Hopefully they actually do something to get the severely mentally ill off the street but I doubt it ..

Sherin also recommended increasing the number of mental health beds in the county, to accommodate people who have been deemed gravely disabled by a mental illness in less hospital-like settings. And he suggested looking at filing more petitions for forced medication with the courts.

Supervisors unanimously voted to pursue the suggestions, except for one — an expanded definition of "gravely disabled" to include those with medical issues who don't pursue treatment "due to a mental disorder."

"We feel it may be a way to engage those individuals who are languishing and suffering due to a mental illness when they might not be in such dire straights and are able to get into treatment," Sherin said.

It's estimated that roughly 1/3 of our homeless population is due to mental illness. While it's important to address, 66% of the problem is lack of "affordable" housing.

Even if it's 1/3 they are the ones costing a majority of the issues .

In terms of affordable housing for homeless this basically means free housing.

If we are going to pay or build housing doesn't it make sense to do it where land and property are a fraction of the cost ?

This way you could house many more people with the same amount of money .

They won't do crap, they'll come up with useless solutions to make the taxpayers think their doing something with the tax increases but in reality they'll **** it all away.

Uh, not to be a jerk, but what...? Source?

I put "affordable housing" in quotes because there are so many different definitions of it, even our own city officials don't know what it means. I've heard 30% of the median income in LA county is the most agreed upon. However, that's still not affordable for many and you could argue it means Section 8 housing or a certain percentage of the average household income.

Also, how do you determine if someone is homeless? Is it living in a RV parked on the street? Couch surfing? Sharing a 1 bedroom with multiple people? Sleeping in your car or office for a few days?

A source for what? The statement that the homeless can't afford to pay anything in rent and that tax payers would be subsidizing them?

Do you agree with Garcetti's statement?

"Angelenos deserve housing they can afford, no matter their income," said Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Los Angeles housing authority opens Section 8 waiting list lottery for first time in 13 years | abc7.com

The reality is we can't afford to house everyone in L.A that wants to live here and we don't have the space for it either.

If someone wants to come from Mexico or China or the Midwest with the dream of living in L.A and empty pockets we should subsidize all of them? Why?

Especially housing in SoCal.

Free housing, boy would that draw a lot of homeless TO LA.

Other cities would pay the one way bus fare.
