The answer can be found in the movie Lady Bird. Girl moves to NYC for college and a guy at a party asks her where she's form and she says Sacramento. He stares blankly. She revises it to San Francisco and he says "Oh, great city!".

I have a story to share regarding this.
I'm from Pasadena, and I have a cousin who lives in Garden Grove, in the OC. Well my cousin has always bash LA County and has always felt superior because she lives in the OC.

So then this one time, we went up north to San Francisco, and we stop to get gas at a rural Chevron, near where the I-580 and I-5 meet.
Well the lady at the gas station was super nice and starting making conversation with us. So she then ask where we were from, my cousin in a heart beat said "Oh I'm from the OC"... the lady started blankly and said "where?" , so my cousin repeated "From the OC... Garden Grove".... again the lady was "oh i don't know where that's at...is it in California" lol

Then my cousin answered "yes.. you know Disneyland...the OC"... and the lady quickly said "Oh you mean LA!!" lol

By this time, my cousin was annoyed lol
But yes, the farther you go away, southern CA simply becomes LA to most people.....

Personally, living in Pasadena, I 100% identify as being part of LA and not so much the SGV...tbh.

Like Hemet, Banning, La Quinta, or Indio?

Pasadena, located within the region of the SGV, is in Los Angeles County.

I can't stand when idiots from areas like Irvine and Santa Clarita say they're from LA especially if they're "hip-hop" heads.

Same reason everyone from the San Fernando Valley claims their from LA. It's just easier to understand geographically i guess. And most people understand the span of the LA county, whereas a lot of people that aren't locals don't know anything or much at all about SFV. Its easier to contextualize i guess

Both LA city and County depending on the area of the SFV.
