I always hear that Echo Park is better north of Sunset.

How bad is the area bordered by Sunset, Alvarado, Glendale Blvd, and the 101?

Its WAY south of Sunset, but I don't know how bad it is. Is Sunset the barrier between old school Echo Park and gentrified Echo Park?
Is that specific area any kind of gang territory or very dangerous?

Angelino Heights is east of Glendale and south of Sunset, and there are some nice Victorians surrounded by some fixer-uppers (and worse). West of Glendale and east of Alvarado is a small area that would be described as lower-middle class.

i don't think the area is necessarily more dangerous than anywhere else, but it is certainly a run down neighborhood with majority latino immigrants. i'm sure that if you spoke spanish it would help you get by a little easier in that area. one good think is that you would be real close to the roller derby arena on temple near alvarado.

Derby Dolls, yeah! Have you been? I read about NPR reporter Alex Cohen in the Times being into the roller derby gig. My niece would enjoy it. I have yet to go but would like to check it out.
