Hey all, I am currently playing with the idea of applying for LAPD and moving out there sometime within the next 6-8months. My starting salary would be around $61,000. I am single and will be moving out there alone. I just wanted some opinions on the cost of living and if I will do pretty good on that salary. (Apartments, etc)

My other option that I am looking into as well is Dallas which I have heard is a very nice area as well. The starting pay around there is 40,000 but when I did the cost of living calculator it was about even with LAs. Thanks for any input.

What area of LA would you be working? LAPD covers a massive area here with vastly different costs of living.

I honestly could not tell you where I would be working considering how much area the LAPD covers. Most likely the west, near Long Beach, or Newton??

What parts are more expensive? It seems like the only major factor is housing.

Expect to pay at least 1200 for a 1 bedroom in a good area.

The only major factor is housing. If you are living on the west side, you will pay more for rent, but less for utilities. If you are in a valley, the opposite is true, because you need air conditioning. Seriously, this is something worthy of consideration.

There are a couple of cops on this board - hopefully they'll chime in.

$61,000 for a single guy is FINE; don't let anyone tell you it isn't. Once you know where you will be working, this board is a great place to help figure out which place makes sense to live.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah basically I just want to know making 60,000+ being single will be enough to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and if it matters within 5 years I should be making 100,000.

I really think LA has to offer and the only negative I can see if the housing cost and traffic (however I would think traffic is not very crazy at midnight? hopefully one of the benefits to my chosen profession)

Also what are the chances of finding a good house in a decent area for around 300,000-400,000 in the LA area or surrounding areas?
