Perhaps somebody has a good recommendation how prospective renters can avoid scams.

When I used to live in rented apartments I discovered only late in the game that older apartment buildings are almost always cheaper and often have larger rooms. A well maintained building might be cheaper and better than more expensive or "luxury" apartments.

Thanks for the info. I've never used Craigslist to get an apartment I usually drive the area I like and go to management offices and get the info. I was just using craigslist to get an idea of what the properties in LA look like and what price range I should expect.
I did find it weird that the same pics and descriptions would be on different listing with two different addresses. Plus with all the craziness associated with craigslist I would get anything or meet anyone on that site.

I wouldn't make any decisions without taking a trip to LA and looking for yourself. It's a good excuse to take a trip. Flights to California are pretty cheap right now so why not!

Im going in a few weeks. The prices were extremely cheap I got a flight, hotel and car rental for under $1000 for a week and a half.
Thats probably the only benefit of this economy is that vacation costs are down.

I am moving hopefully next month to SoCal, but I will definitely visit the apartments and get a feel of the neighbourhood before renting. I called a few apartments in the L.A area and they told me the rents will probably stay low for a while.
