I'm moving to LA for a summer internship/job and I'm just trying to find out which area is going to make me the happiest to live in.
Our office is located in North Hollywood, but I will rarely have to actually be in the office.
More often I'll be out in search of live music, great venues, etc.

I'm moving from Nashville, TN and I'm extremely happy here. I guess I'm just looking for an area of LA that will at least have similarities to the traits I love about Nashville.
Currently I live in the "hipster" area. Artists, musicians, photographers, etc. We've got great local pubs, restaurants with a fun, quaint atmosphere, and so many young and talented people.

Any help would be appreciated and I'd be happy to answer specific questions. Thanks!

I'm from TN so I can tell you one thing, you won't find ANYTHING like Nashville here.

I've been to the South, but not Nashville specifically. I don't get the impression that you'll find much similar in L.A. Quaintness and charm aren't exactly our strong points.

BUT, for live music, the Hollywood area is definitely where to be. For the hipster scene there's Hollywood/West Hollywood and Los Feliz/Silverlake. Downtown, Santa Monica/Venice and Ventura Blvd. in the Valley to a lesser extent.

i'd focus my search in los feliz or silverlake. silverlake is very hipster and los feliz has a bunch of good neighborhoody style bars/restaurants. the music scene is mostly based out of silverlake and hollywood which aren't that far apart either. if you're going to be looking for hipster style bands, you'll probably be visiting The Echo and Spaceland pretty frequently as well as the clubs in hollywood. the only issue you'll have is finding a place with a short term lease.

There are quaint and charming areas and there are hipster areas, but they don't really overlap. I think the locations listed so far are all good suggestions, with a leaning towards the hipster and music options rather than the quaint (but not without their own charm, depending on how you define it). What's the budget?

The short-term thing could be an issue, but if you're lucky you could find a furnished sub-lease.

Hi; My husband & I live in Hollywood, near Sunset Bl. & Laurel Canyon. Laurel Canyon is just over the hill to N. Hollywood, easy. Our side is great for everything you asked for, music, cafes, movies,
& etc. We have lived here for 15 + yrs. & love this area for its easy access to everything. [mod cut: no advertising]

Yeah I agree with what other people said. For the hipster type of area check out Silverlake, Los Feliz, Hollywood, Echo Park, and West Hollywood. I actually think North Hollywood is somewhat of a hipster area too. I think NOHO is a really cool part of the valley and very underrated.

I would suggest about the same as others, but much depends on your housing budget and yes, the short term thing is really going to be an issue.

By the way, wanting to be in an area like Nashville, regardless isn't going to happen, but part of what you want can be found in Echo Park, Silverlake, Hollywood etc. Go and enjoy what Ca has to offer and forget about what you like about where you are now. This will be an opportunity to see and enjoy a totally different life...

You're all so helpful! I've heard Silverlake and Los Feliz from most people now, so I'll definitely be looking into that. I'm not quite sure what my budget for rent is going to be at this point, but my internship will be covering expenses...maybe $1000-$1200 a month? I'm beginning to think that perhaps I should just forget about indie adorable and just make sure I'm near the beach. I'm heading to LA in March for Spring Break to explore some options. I've contacted a few companies about finding a furnished, short-term place but no luck so far. Does anyone have recommendations for local eats and shops? Major props to the person with the best veggie burrito recommendation.
