I'm inclined to say baseball given LA's large Latino population, but it appears you guys love your Lakers.

What say you? I ask cuz coming from Chicago I could never be in a city that doesn't appreciate its baseball.

Lakers are #1, but the Dodgers are definitely a strong #2. None of our other pro teams are anywhere near the level of these two. USC football is probably the #3 most popular team, but they're obviously not pro.

I don't think it is the Latino population, it is just the Dodgers. When they came to Los Angeles in 1958 the whole city stood behind them, this is still true today.

yep, USC has to be considered right up there with the Lakers and Dodgers. All three are popular..L.A. fans are just as loyal as fans anywhere.

I forgot about USC. Now the Trojans are so easy to despise given their new d-bag head coach.

Midwesterners had a lot of respect for Pete Carroll, tho.

In terms of attendance, baseball(Angels and Dodgers both have over 3 million per year).

In terms of notoriety, basketball/Lakers. Dodgers are choke artists in the playoffs and the Angels aren't much better, so they present no challenge to a basketball team that makes it to the Finals often. People pretend the Clippers don't exist though, so that hurts basketball.

Probably goes like this:
1) Basketball
2) Baseball
3) College Football(will wane if USC doesn't rebound)
4) Hockey(Kings are improving year to year but will never recover to Gretzky era notoriety and the Ducks had a very long home sellout streak during the 00's including a few Stanley Cup apperances)
5) College Basketball(temporarily elevates much higher if UCLA is a Final Four contender)
6) Soccer

Back in the 1970s, before Magic, I would have clearly said the Dodgers, and it almost seemed the Lakers were in the Dodger shadow. Because, back then, fresh in everyone's memory where the Dodger championships of 1959, 1963 and 1965, (runner up in 1966, 1974, 1977, and 1978), Koufax and Drysdale, Garvey, Cey, Lopes, Russell, Alston, LaSorda, Vin Scully and a fairly new Dodger Stadium. Also, in the 1970s, the NBA was not as popular as it is today.

But now, the Lakers are an elite organization in the league. Fifteen championships.

Still no team, not even the boston celtics, new york yankees, or montreal candiens, were as dominant as John Wooden's UCLA Bruins, winning 10 NCAA titles in 12 seasons including a record seven straight national championships.

World cup soccer, or as my wifes family calls it futball.

For me it is USC Football, Dodgers, Angels, Dallas Cowboys (What can I say they trained here in Oxnard for a while.)

Can't disagree that the Lakers are the "king" in sports for Los Angeles with the Dodgers right behind. Then the Angels. Galaxy is popular due to large Latino population. Has anyone attended a King's game [ice hockey]? Also boxing is popular in LA. Most popular NCAA team is USC and\ or UCLA football followed by basketball [though the 2 sports are pretty close in popularity]. Surfing and beach volleyball are the favorite sports for many Angelenos.
