Hey all!! Just looking for some advice! Time wise Lake Charles is about as long as we want to drive before a stop. (Begin the day starting in Orlando). I have a 6 year old who will begin to lose his mind if we push him too much more than that!! Just wanted to know if Lake Charles was a decent place to stop for a night before heading home.

Thanks in advance!

Your plan is to drive 820 miles in one day from Orlando to Lake Charles? That is roughly 12 hours of driving time, not counting stops for fuel, food, bathrooms. That would be a very long day in the car for most kids. Plus, driver exhaustion comes into play when you are driving for 12 to 14 hours.

You would be better off stopping in Slidell, LA, which is about 600 miles from Orlando, and several hours less driving time. Slidell is roughly half way between Orlando and Austin.

If I made that drive I would probably do two stops. One around Mobile, Alabama or Biloxi, Mississippi, and I guess the second one could be around Lake Charles.

Lake Charles's tourist value is mainly limited to the two big casinos, L'Auberge and Golden Nugget which are nice properties, with large outdoor pools and lazy rivers. Otherwise Lake Charles is mainly an industrial city with the landscape dominated by petrochemical plants.

Guessing you already made the drive but Lake Chuck is a popular place to stop for Texans driving east.

Lake Charles is located in Louisiana and is situated along I-10, making it a potential stop on the journey between Orlando and Austin. However, whether it is a good stop or not depends on your preferences, interests, and travel plans.

Lake Charles can offer a nice break for travelers, as it's a mid-sized city with a few attractions. It is known for its casinos, outdoor activities on the lake, and some historical sites. If you enjoy gambling or want to explore a bit of Louisiana culture, it might be a good stopover.

Here are some factors to consider:

Distance: The distance between Orlando and Lake Charles is around 600 miles (965 km), and from Lake Charles to Austin, it's about 210 miles (340 km). Depending on how long you plan to drive each day, you may want to check the distances and plan your stops accordingly.

Time: Consider the time it will take to reach Lake Charles from Orlando and then continue to Austin. Factor in your desired travel pace and how much time you have for the entire journey.

Interests: Think about your interests and preferences. If you enjoy exploring new places and don't mind taking detours, Lake Charles could be a nice addition to your trip. However, if your primary focus is reaching Austin quickly, you might consider other stops along the way or bypassing Lake Charles altogether.

Other options: There are several other cities and towns along I-10 that you could consider for a stopover. Cities like New Orleans (Louisiana), Mobile (Alabama), or Pensacola (Florida) also offer interesting attractions and sights.

You can stop at the Golden Nugget or Lauberge. Maybe get some Cajun food. Considering your other options, I'd say sure
