IHG has submitted request for approval with MB P&Z for a new 87 room 4 story Avid hotel in DT Macon. This will be the 4th hotel coming to DT Macon. (1) 298 rooms Wyndham hotel planned for the old 16 story hotel, (opening in 2021), (2) A 121 rooms new Hyatt Hotel on Popular St, (3) A 94-room Tribute Portfolio - Marriott with rooftop bar, valet parking, a coffee and wine shop in the 11 story Willie C. Hill annex building (opening March 2021). Macon has a very high and growing demand for hotel rooms in the urban core.
I can't see more than 2 of these actually coming to fruition. (1) I will believe it when I see it open. The old Ramada has been "expected" to reopen for 10 years now. (2) This sounded promising, but no dirt has been moved however many years later. Rumor has it that funding is an issue. (3) work has stopped on this building. Just an empty shell now. Who knows if it will ever resume? The empty lot across Cotton where Nu-way used to be is still fenced off and barren too! Lots of promises and tax breaks given with no results. Our local officials need to mandate completion dates with these projects and if they aren't met....conditional zoning and approved tax breaks sunset. My feeling now is these investors are just buying it up, changing the zoning, getting the tax break and have no intention to do anything but wait for a buyer to make an easy profit. Meanwhile, the lots/buildings sit vacant and ugly. I am over all of them. Excuse after excuse is all we hear.
Stretching the urban core to 75/ Mercer area would be ideal.
using 75 would be like going through town.
Yea that would be ideal. I think that Macon also needs to remove some trees covering the downtown skyline going East to West and vice versa. The skyline looks great coming from the new 2nd street bridge though.
Even though Macon is smaller than Columbus, Macon has a taller skyline than Columbus, which is very frustrating to me. But downtown Columbus is much nicer and much more vibrant than Macon's! I used to live in Warner Robins and wish Nu-Way would come to downtown Columbus, near the Whitewater Express, river zipline, and Columbus State University. The new Bank's Food Hall by the river would be an ideal location!

There not much of a big different in size or vibrancy between Macon and Columbus, It's not like Columbus is a Huge City compared to Macon; their populations only vary just a few thousand ppl between the two with Macon at (153K) and Columbus at (195K). The thing that helps Macon and Augusta stand out is both cities has a skyline and Columbus Don't, and probably never will. However, to you point, Macon does have a smaller pop but feels and appear as a much larger city than Columbus.
