Yes - I'm seeing this style go up everywhere here now. This looks like one of the nicer examples. Some are just heinous, like this one for example: Artisan Square :: Apartment Showcase of Madison. It's making me miss the new construction scene here 10 years ago when it seemed all of the developers had forgotten how to build anything but prairie style buildings.

This is a lot of what we are having built in Boston too. Mostly particle board, thrown up fast, 2 bedroom condos pre selling at 550-700 k and selling out and 1 bedroom apartments for 2500k, ugh.

Seriously. And the one I posted looks so much better in the photos than it does in person. The only reasonable explanation I have for the way it looks is that the developer had a bunch of siding left over from other projects and told the designer that was all they got to work with, and the designer was so disgusted they gave the project to their five year old. The off-white sections look in person like unfinished drywall. It truly makes it look like they ran out of siding options. So, yes, I think part of what makes this particular example so unsuccessful is the quality of the materials used.

My children have made a sport of egging me on every time we pass this particular building, asking me what exactly I dislike about it. It's fun for the whole family.
