We went hiking today up Albany Mountain in Albany, ME (south of Bethel) and we saw these tracks. Can someone please identify them? The round part at the top was the size of a balled fist. They were very large! I've looked at prints of various large mammals common to Maine and nothing seems to resemble this picture. These tracks are about a day old at oldest, and several hours old at the newest.

Can you identify these tracks?-print3.jpg

There are no rabbits in Albany, Maine. Way down in York County there MAY be a few cottontail rabbits left. If so, they are the only ones in Maine.

I agree, the two longer marks are the hind feet, the smaller one is the front feet together.

Thanks for the quick response. Waaaay too big to be a regular rabbit, but perhaps a snowshoe hare? The track was easily 7" long.

Default Rabbit

Judging from your photo it was moving from the top-left of the shot to the bottom-right. The front feet (small) are held close together, are extended forward and touch down. The rear feet (larger) are brought forward and straddle the fore feet. They extend beyond the fore feet and touch down.

We also saw there the largest coyote I have EVER seen. Looked extremely well fed! Very thick coat, very muscular, huge size.

He would be some good eats in a stew with carrots, potato, onion, celery; and I think some mint.
