Buying Easy Pass not so easy in Maine

I got my EZ Pass from New Hampshire a few years ago when they were doing a free transponder promotion.

Since ME/MA/NH and a bunch of other states all honor each others transponders, it worked out great.

We have a NY E-Z Pass account and have never had a problem using a transponder is rental or loaner cars. When doing so, I've never changed the vehicle tag assigned to the particular transponder. The E-Z Pass system never fails to collect the toll. Nor does it issue any kind of fine for the transponder not matching the license plate number.

I think the system, at least in NY, has elminated the transponder - vehicle connection as one can get a transponder and establish an account without having a vehicle. In fact is seems that E-Z Pass On-the-Go is available at all sorts of retailers in NY.

Picking up one at a retailer is what I was going to suggest to Maineah when I started reading the thread as his son was headed to NY, but then read that he did receive them.

Someday Maine will come out of the dark ages and easy pass will be available online, we will be able to buy wine over the internet, beer tents will be allowed at festivals, my Town office will take debit and credit cards,and fireworks will be legal. I won't hold my breath waiting for it to happen though.
