Looking For Ridiculously Remote And Isolated Land (Bangor: sales, real estate)

hi everyone, we have recently found a place NW of Bangor online and are going to come up there in a few days to look at it.....it is going to be nowhere even close to as remote as we want, but there is a house on it already, so it might be a great place for us to live so we can work in Bangor

now what we also want to find is a piece of land that is so unbelievable isolated from any population that it would scare 99% of peeps to even drive there on their own! preferrably something 15 miles or so down a paper company logging road....a place with ZERO utilities available......basically a place where we can put up a handbuilt off grid cabin and drive out to it and sit and paint and relax and not have a single distraction in the world other than maybe a moose wandering up into the yard while painting

just to express what I am referring to, we have seen many many parts of Alaska that were far too populated for our liking (at least in terms of the place we want to have our cabin at...my other half does a bit of one off custom artwork commissions so we are looking for a really particular place).....if the closest neighbors were 20 miles away that would be just fine........needless to say, it doesn't matter how far of a drive we have to make cause we won't be commuting to work from the property!

Maine offers many areas which are remote; many properties that are only accessible via dirt road; and many properties which have no utilities.

On the other hand, the majority of Maine allows off-grid owner-built cabins.

You can be off-grid, and a mile radius from the nearest neighbor without being 15 miles down a dirt road.

Okay that sounds reasonable.

Are there any more specifics that you are looking for? To help narrow down the search.

we were up in Maine for the first time last year and fell in love with it immediately....we used to live in Minnesota and are greatly looking forward to getting back to the land of lots of ice scrapers and no sky scrapers

as far as narrowing it down, prolly would have to say that the farther NW the better....there are places that look perfect on the map but that we haven't found any listings at all....Clayton Lake looks like our IDEAL place, but we are not sure (beyond the obvious) what it means by "private road open to public for fee"...would that include land owners? I assume this is logger road???

since this will be a cabin place, not a residence, we would like for it to be as cheap as possible...we are not wealthy by any means, but have good paying work and the ability to work as many hours as I can stay awake for, thereby granting me some flexibility in saving up purchase money.

I think you may need to make a few more trips to Maine, check out all of the regions of the state.

52% of Maine's townships are un-organized. Which means that either they never banded together to form a formal organization and raise taxes; or they did but later decided to burn their town charter and lower their taxes; or perhaps at some point most of the town folks simply decided to move away leaving the town un-populated.

These Un-organized Townships [UTs] have a much looser system of zoning, as such owner-built is pretty common.

It has lots of realtors in the north country. You can find remote cabins or lots if you go to their links.
One of my favorite places in Maine is the Oxbow area......it's very remote, but might not be remote enough for you.

HELLO THERE MR OZARK.... interesting post.....i myself have been searching for remote land in maine for the better part of 3 year now....outside of private sales i believe i have seen every listing there is on all the various venues available....there are many very private loacation in maine...isolated ( 20 miles from neighbor) i think is another story.....there are others like yourself who crave the same privacy albeit isolation you are looking for....how much do you plan on spending ? what amount of acreage are you looking for ?...i think the northwest of maine would be a bit more open than the east due to the proximity of i-95 then again you have more influences from the northeastern states..
in my opinion if you have enough land where it is very private and far enough off any paved road then once inside your land your i'd say your about as private & isolated as one can be in maine..land size would be the key factor here

Jim...the only place I have ever found that fit my bill exactly was indeed Alaska...but living there presents it own unique set of circumstances.....as far as how much land, no more than 15k worth at the moment...instead of buying 100 acres and going in debt, we figure drive furthur and have a few acres and get the same effect of being isolated and pay cash and then we would own it, not the bank

Our home is not remote nor isolated. We bought with cash. We got two properties in Maine, each property listed and sold for ~$35k. They straddle on either sides of a public road.

One is 42+ acres of forest with 1/4 mile of riverfrontage; and the second property is 105+ acres of forest.

HELLO OZARK.....15k isnt going to get you much in maine....thats for sure....there are alot of 15k properties but not many acres.....then you have to be concerned about who owns the surrounding land & what they are going to do with their property...i was like you in the beginning of my search but as time went by you see what available & knowing your budget you compromise....when i was in maine the land parcels i saw were nothing like i envisioned them to be....i went from going to install a new fully outfitted cabin on 40 acres or so to holding off & getting a motorhome to explore more of maine before i buy...that is where i'm at now....i have plenty of time and in hurry....have 3 years till retirement......you'll come to your own conclusion as to whats best for you in due time & after plenty of investigation & visits to see what maine has to offer

Don't forget that Alaska DOES have what you're looking but so remote that food will be expensive plus when you get older, you may not want to deal with the cold weather and contend with vicious mosquitoes and no-see-ums. Alaska actually has programs for people who want to find land that is isolated. Additionally once you live there for a year and have registered with the state, you would qualify for the annual oil dividends and when you get old enough to collect Social Security, you will get (I forget what the label is) an extra $200-300 a month in your check for living in Alaska.

Maine would be easier to get goods/food since shipping prices aren't outrageous. I've never been to Maine though. Good luck!
