Best friend and I are from the same exact island in south Florida. She 'warshes' clothes. I 'wash' them. No clue how in the world we grew up on the same three mile by four mile island and spoke a different language! LOL

Reminds me of a dear college friend who was Jewish and grew up in NC. She had a significant drawl and I really feared for her on her first trip to Israel in the '80's. I kept telling her that there's no way to disguise the fact that she's American as soon as she opens her mouth. Thankfully she has traveled back and forth to the Middle East without incident.

And why do most people, outside of New England of course, pronounce Washington as Wershington? Funny, a college up here in the Boston area just built a new dorm which is referred to as the North Dorm. When I talk about it (it is totally geothermal) I call it the Noth Dom which makes even some New Englanders give a second listen.

The "intrusive R" in words like wash and Washington doesn't exist for "most Americans"; it's most common in the so-called Midland region including western Pennsylvania, central Ohio, central Indiana, parts of Illinois and Missouri, and most of Iowa and Nebraska.
