What is "poor man's fertilizer"? Since I get to work from home now and have more time, this year I'm going to try to grow a few more veggies in some small garden areas in the back. I would love to know what that "fertilizer" is so I don't go spending money on things I don't need...and have all of the locals laugh at me as I walk out of the store. "Look at that outsider. Damn shame, she doesn't even know about poor man's fertilizer. Oh well, let's put this money in the register."

I know I may be alone in this: Hurray!!

At 7:30 we had a measured 4 1/2 inches and it must be about 6 inches now. It's wet and sticky, but the back edge is only about a half hour away from us so it looks like no rain up here. It's heavy stuff. We only have about 30 to 35 inches on the ground, but it is very dense. I sure hope we have a slow thaw, because a warm rain on this would bring a very big flood.

Three Wolves in Snow, "poor man's fertilizer" is snow. Vegetation and debris that falls onto and into layers of snow throughout the winter are broken down and distributed across the soil as the snow melts in spring. the soil thus benefits somewhat from a snowy winter as opposed to a dry one.

No snow at all on MDI. Of course there is between 2-4 inches of ice covering my driveway. I've tried a pick axe, but its a waste of time. Hopefully by May 1st in six weeks it will be gone.

I am totally laughing at myself right now. Here I was, all worried that the locals would laugh at me for buying fertilizer, when they may be laughing at me right now.

At least now I know. Thanks.

Almost a foot of new snow in The County today; but "winter's back is broken", as they say, and spring is just around the corner. As NMLM said, let's hope for a nice, gradual melt this spring because there is alot of moisture out there.

If we do get a big one next week then we will be looking at possibly the second-snowiest winter ever (at least in Caribou).

I heard today described as January 84th. Sure seems like January. It was 5 below this morning. The lakes are still "makin ice" and the Penobscot River is closing up. It normally opens up about now.

Even this thread feels ancient. I'm gonna go back and check. It was started last July, right?
