So housing seems to be affordable especially when buying but my next concern which I've not had answered yet is with regards to heating oil seems to be common something I am not used to having always had natural gas for heat here in the west. This seems less so in portland but many job prospects for me appear to be in lewiston which also appears to have more affordable housing my question is how much does one typically spend heating a home say a 3 bed 2 bath or a 1 bed apartment or studio (the latter used for transitioning until family can join me) ?

Also what of other utilities such as water, electric and trash?

This question is not really able to be answered effectively because houses different so much in size, how old the windows are and how much insulation it has, etc.

Most rural homes have well water, septic system and haul their own trash to a transfer station. Electric is similiar question to oil.... too many variables to answer effectively. If you have a power bill handy, our rate here is about $.155 per kwh, including all taxes, fees, surcharges, delivery, supply.

So last month if you used 2000 KWH, your bill would be $310

Rent your first year. It gives you a base of operations, from which you can explore the area, and determine which community you want to become rooted in.
