What is the current retail and or wholesale price for lobster? (Portland: for sale, buy)

When I was at the world famous Falmouth Landing Market last month, I wanted to treat my sister to a lobster roll, but as per the lady making sandwiches there, lobster meat was $68 per pound, so we settled for a crab meat roll instead.

My understanding is that whole lobster was around $15 - $17/lb (retail).

Is that east coast lobster or west coast lobster? I don't know if there is a difference in price, but I know it's a completely different fishery there are oppsed to here in Maine (and the lobsters themselves are different, too)

I'm not sure what you mean by current price vs. regular price. Anywhere I have ever seen lobster for sale, it is at market price, which fluctuates according to availablity and costs in selling. This year, I would expect people will pay more, because of the increase in shipping/gas costs.

Exactly, there's no real "average" price for lobster....they come right from the ocean to market, and there are many factors that will give you a price. Many think that the lobstermen make a killing as far as income, but it's a very tough way to make a living---the work is hard, and one day of the boat being down needing repairs can mean a lot of lost income. People don't tend to think of that when they go to their market and see the price.

As far as ordering lobster at a restaurant.....cost wise, way more expensive then going to market, picking one up, and cooking it at home! And, really, who wants to get that messy in public, in a restaurant with other people you don't know? Not me!

oh c'mon molly, where's your sense of adventure?? its kinda fun cracking open a few lobsters and watching the juice and tomale, spray all over the place!!
actually, im a good lobster picker,,use to go lobstering everyday, have a couple on the boat everyday, and put on some clambakes..
our family past-time is to get together and have a lobster-feed,,use to have contests who could eat the most,,
a clambake,,with lobsters and steamers, cooked/smoked in seaweed,,,is my favorite!!
i saw on the history or foodchannel,, how the indians use to do thier clambakes,,they'd burn much wood on rocks,,,and they'd use the rocks to generate the heat, then dump good quantities of seaweed on the rocks with lobsters (and/or clams) in the seaweed,,and that would cook the lobsters,,i thought the moisture in the seaweed would cool down the rocks,,but it didnt,,
they said the indians had done that for thousands of years..
and that lobsters were so plentiful, that they could pick them off the pools/rocks at low tide in maine. quite interesting

I've had friends who have done that--cooking them with the seaweed the traditional way, but I've never seen it....we're actually heading to Eastport tonight for a bonfire on the beach with some friends....after your post I'm thinking maybe we need to do more than just the Doritos....

mainers have about 6-8 weeks to make their living, (summer - school's out) so during that time every thing is too much $$. the out of staters pay it cause "it's maine"

I saw 8.99/lb at the fish market on Forest Ave in Portland day before yesterday.
Lobster rolls is a pretty expensive way to get your lobster fix. I can buy a nice 1lb/1.25lb lobster and make 3 lobster rolls.
