This thread sure is getting a lot more action than the Humpty Dumpty potato chip thread.

On that note, Mrs. Dunster should hire us to do an ad for her.

I'm not much of a donut fan. I just get cravings for these occasionally. I've found that the sell by dates in baked goods aren't very trustworthy. Sure, if you get them to end of the cycle they are still edible, but they aren't good. If I'm going to eat something that bad for me I want it to be great, not mediocre.

Hillman's are probably the second best locally, but you have to get there at the crack of dawn or they are all sold out. It's also completely out of my way. The last time I tried Dunkin Donuts was around five years ago and it was disgusting - not fresh and hardly any creme filling. I later found out it was because they now make them off site and ship them in. Yuck.

I remember Harris Bakery. I also remember going to the thrift store next door with my grandparents quite often. To this day I remember the Entenmann's cupcakes. They came in a box of six with no packaging- just the box and a plastic holder. They were huge. Three had chocolate frosting and the other three had vanilla frosting. They were filled with a ton of cream. We used to buy them and we would eat them cold. I loved them. They were much better than Hostess. Then they just disappeared one day. Haven't seen them since.

Wal Mart in Augusta sells Mrs. Dunster's Donuts. Usually they are back by the milk; occasionally they are near the front entrance after the Dunkin' Donuts.

Entenmanns are still in business, not sure if the sell them in Maine anywhere but just about every grocery store in North Carolina has them.

We still get Entenmann's here. But that particular product seems to have been discontinued for quite some time

Mrs. Dunster's is about as good as you'll find for packaged donuts. I'd take them any day over the stuff they call donuts at Dunkin Donuts and Tim Horton's, but the homemade product you find at the local general store or wherever will usually be better.

I don't know where you are now, but if you know anyone from the Bangor area, you ought to have them ship you a dozen Gosselin's Bakery doughnuts.

They are to die for. Literally.

You are missing out! They are sold at Walmart, Hannaford, and Shaws at the end of the bread aisle and Friends and Family Market in Ellsworth Falls (and maybe other stores).... and the date is on the plastic dohickey. Check the date for those that will last/be fresh longest.

Radio Flyer: Yes, I remember Harris Donuts. My grandmother loved the molasses ones. I think the Harris truck used to deliver (stopped door to door) on my road, also Grant's milk, Footman's milk, a fish truck ... ahhh, those were the days.
