For the last three years I have not been able to find fruit cakes in local stores. Our daughter-in-law sent away to Vermont and bought one for us last year, but they are around $50. It was delicious and much appreciated, but we asked her not to spend that much again.

Grocery stores used to stock round fruitcakes in tins and square ones about 2 inches square and 10 inches long wrapped in clear film. I asked a girl in a store today if they had fruit cakes and she said, "What's a fruit cake?" There is a Christmas Tree Shop in Bangor next to Harbor Freight and I'll stop there. Maybe they will have a fruit cake. It it's fifty bucks, I'll pass on it.

I love fruitcakes but they are made with wheat, and wheat now sets off my Chronic Lyme disease meds.

I used to get them for 3 bucks in PA back in the '80's. I would never pay anyone $50 for a fruitcake.

I bought a new car for a lot less in the 80s also... fresh scallops $6 per lb. a few year ago... no fee to enter Acadia National Park for MANY years... prices occur and increase over time

Windsor, Maine $23 plus shipping--shipping example--to Ellsworth, Priority Mail, $7.35
Website says 2 lb. cakes liberally soaked in brandy.

Fruitcake - Transfiguration Hermitage

Here's a recipe for Old Fashioned Maine Fruitcake if you want to try making it yourself or can talk someone into making it for you. RecipeCurio.comOld Fashioned Maine Fruitcake Recipe Clipping | RecipeCurio.com

I called Friends & Family and they are not making them.

Rooster Brothers (Ellsworth) should have some Rum cakes ready tomorrow. $16.95 size approximately six inches by two inches... call (207) 667-8675.

You might want to call some local (to you) bakeries; they could be making fruitcake for the Christmas season. Have you checked Reny's and/or Marden's?

PS Couldn't you substitute almond flour for wheat? --just a suggestion.

It'll probably be 10 years old...but then, they last for a couple of centuries, don't they?

I think Walmart may sell fruitcakes, the square brick kind. We would give my dad one for Christmas and he would keep it in his car as winter survival food since they last forever.
