Does anyone have a bank they actually like? Are there any Maine-based banks that have a workable app with mobile deposit and such? Any with relatively decent fees? I am moving to Maine (finally!! see more below) and my bank (Wells Fargo) has no branches there. I didn't want to keep this bank anyway but I also had a mortgage there and it was convenient. Thanks for any recommendations.

The move: After three years of research, over a hundred saved houses on Zillow, countless hours spent reading these posts, and multiple visits to understand the lay of the land and to begin to build a social network, I found an exquisite midcoast home that is perfect for me. I bought the house a few months back and retired last month. I move next week and could not be happier. I have quite a list of resources that have been useful and it anyone is interested I'd be happy to post them. Incidentally, several City-Data members were extremely helpful to me. You know who you are. Thank you so much.
We ran into the same thing when we moved to Maine from Virginia. We use to have Sun Trust, and there were no branches... We went to Machias Bank and they are Great ! Home town banking at its finest
( by the way- as an FYI - Wells Fargo will do the same- when you change your mailing address, they will give you about 6 months, then close your account. Reason we were told was out of state banking they do not serve... )
TD Bank, Camden National Bank and Midcoast Federal Credit Union are a few with branches on the midcoast that offer mobile banking. I have an account with TD Bank and I like them. They're a larger bank(Canadian) with a local connection here in Maine as they are one of the larger employers.
We use TD Bank. They were Peoples some 40 years ago and were bought out by Toronto Dominion. Excellent service and up to date electronic banking.
The two best Maine based banks are Machias Savings and Bangor Savings. They understand rural Maine. The giant bailout banks do not understand rural Maine.
I highly recommend credit unions. You get four time the interest on your savings. You can get 2% on an IRA.
We've used Machias Savings Bank since 1998 and are pleased with their service. I'll be closing my account at Down East CU. Lovely people but the breeches, problems with debit cards not pinging and fees are ridiculous.
I don't know exactly where in midcoast you are, but The First is in Damaroscotta. We've dealt with The First and Bangor Savings Bank. I can't think of any problems we've had with either bank. I can't comment about any mobile banking apps since we don't use phones for banking.
These are great recommendations, thanks everyone. I should have looked at a map first, but having done so I can see which banks are in my closest towns, which are Camden and Belfast. I've narrowed it down to Camden or TD. Neither is getting decent reviews for the app. Sounds like there are some uptime issues with Camden National but they have a free checking package that sounds pretty good for me.
In about a week I can change the location in my profile here.
Can i butt in and change the subject? If not - feel free to delete... Did you use a Buyer's Agent also? I've been told i probably should since i'm moving from out of state. Happy to hear about your move - and so excited about mine - FINALLY. Hopefully my house in NJ WILL be listed next month if all continues to go well.
(I'll give you my email if you'd like to send me any things that you think might help!)
@Jellybean50, I did have a broker who helped with my search. He was recommended by a fellow City-Data forum member and he was outstanding to work with at every step, even when I was still eighteen months out. PM me if you want his contact info.
Pretty sure this should be a new thread though. I'll happily post my list of resources there.
