My boyfriend and I are planning a big move to Maine sometime in the next year and we are looking for any advice we can get. We currently live in Upstate New York and absolutely love the nature, beauty and peace of the area. We are looking for a cool, secluded area to live with our cat and dog. Maine seemed to be calling our names everywhere we looked.

Being close to home is a big thing to us, hence why we'd prefer to live somewhere like Brunswick or south of Portland. We are completely open to any advice and comments people have on specific areas. We want to make this move as perfectly as possible. That involves finding the perfect place which we all know can be very hard.

A big factor for us when moving are the weed laws. Considering we have been medicinal users most of our lives wed love to live somewhere where cannabis is legal to use and relatively easy to get. We are very curious what the process of obtaining marijuana in Maine is and all the facts that go along with it. Would we be able to grow on our property? What's the lifestyle like for stoners in Maine?

My passion is nature photography and being able to go hiking at my leisure. Living near to a town/city but also far enough out so i can have my own space seems to be no problem in Maine. Are flowers just as abundant in Maine as NY in the different seasons? Where can i experience the most of Maine's beauty without being greedy and traveling too far? Brennan (my boyfriend) and I would like to take a trip after Christmas sometime to visit Maine and test the waters but figuring out where to go to get the full experience seems to be hard. I've come to you, locals, asking for advice on where we should take our small trip in deciding where to move to Maine?

Please feel free to leave any advice or just comments in general. We are so excited about the idea of moving to Maine!

Spend a month in Maine in Jan-March time period then reevaluate. Spend a week in various locations. It's all about the ability to withstand winters here.

Everyone wants to move to Maine in the summer when it's gorgeous. Me included.

We started near caribou and came south bangor was as far south we wanted to go, we moved up from boston last yr and wanted to get away from that.

Wherever i live IS my home , having moved 3k miles to America in the first place. My neighbor is stoned all day, hes not quite right, sounds like a 15 yr old, maybe it helps him. I suspect weed grows like weeds up here. Toss your seeds and live off the fat of the land. No-one cares what you do.

This is not the climate for that. You need a long growing season. Soil in Maine is nothing like New Jersey or Pennsylvania. You have to work at it.

Yes... when you get far out, then no one cares, but more populated towns have codes that are enforced.

I live in the town of Bar harbor(not the village) on Mount Desert Island. I cannot see any of my neighbors through the trees, but when i wanted to bump the side of my house out by 3 inches to accommodate a decent sized refrigerator, I needed to get it approved by the local code enforcement officer. Of course, everyone knows her. heck we used to be Facebook friends. Up here you are only one person removed from any one; either you or one of your friends knows everyone.

I love winter. I think MDI is gorgeous any time of the year. The winters here are no different than Pennsylvania. The cold months are just longer. Its all about having the right gear. If you have the right gear, winter is Maine is no problem at all.

You are right. Visited MDI late October couple years ago and loved it even more. I ran into more people who said their parents were in their 90s and still doing pretty good. Must be the cold

OP, there are many different areas in Maine, some are extremely secluded and some are pretty populated. We've got mountains and lakes, along with both sandy and rocky coastline. Why do you say Brunswick and South Portland when you mention "home"?

I was kinda wondering the same thing. The OP said they live in upstate NY; is that "home" or is somewhere else "home?" If upstate NY is "home," why move to Maine? If "home" is some place other than Maine, why move to Maine? On the other hand, if you want to be closer to family who live somewhere other than Maine, and the family lives in upstate NY, I would suggest living off of Rt. 2 in Maine where you can travel through Maine into NH into VT to Burlington, VT and take the ferry across Lake Champlain into NY.
