Moving to Yarmouth end of August. I have a legit phobia of ticks. How do you guys control them? What's effective for you? What's a waste of time? I have small kids and a dog. We're going to be building a house (renting for a few months during construction) and here's what I plan on doing so far based on what I've read:

- Fence in the yard to control deer movement
- Distribute tick tubes throughout the wooded area of our property
- Treat the yard/perimeter (not sure with what, figured I'd contact a pest control company for this)

Other than tick medication for the dog and ensuring proper clothing/bug spray for us, anything else? Also, I heard something about a caterpillar problem...? What's that about?

Use this. It will clear your property of ticks, mosquitoes, you name it and is safe for pets.

You have a legit preventative list. My mantra is check for ticks, check for ticks and check for ticks.
You, the child and dog are going to get a tick. Seeing them, along with the checklist you provided, will keep all safe.

For dogs- K9 Advantix 2.

Use to use frontline, but if a tick bites- it does die, but the dog can still get Lyme.

Use K9 Advantix and also repells mosquitoes - ... Remember- Maine doesn't have a problem with heartworm, but it is a tourist state. ( dogs from other states... )

for people- honestly- I have yet to see a tick but I use the " repeal" from walmart ( 40 deet) for mosquitoes.... Coincidence... uh.. maybe uh... yea ...

Free range poultry (Chicks, ducks, geese) keep the population down here. Guinea hens are also effective, but very noisy.

I spray the yard with Bayer Complete. 1 teaspoon per gallon. Lasts a long, long time for one bottle. Never had an issue.

Permetherin sprayed on boots, outside shoes, pants, shorts and shirts ahead of time and let dry well. You can order the concentrate on amazon and diluted it down to the clothing ratio fairly easily and extremelly cost effective. It washes out after a few washes.

Then anywhere from 20-30% deet product applied directly to skin on the ankles and arms. During mosquito and black fly seasons its applied on all exposed skin.

Dogs get Frontline or Simpirica, or trying Bravecto now. Cat we have used frontline on.
Yard can be treated with Bifenthrin if you want, cheap to buy online and pretty effective for a few weeks or until it rains a few times. Make sure to spray during dusk or dawn when no bees are out.

Are ticks all over Maine? My guess is they are less prevalent in the cities. What about right on the coast-ocean? Maine also has biting black flies too-right?
