New York coronavirus exodus fuels ‘gangbusters’ Maine real estate boom

[quote]
When asked if it was COVID-19 that forced him to flee New York for Maine in March, Jordan Cohen doesn’t waffle.

“One hundred percent,” the Greenwich Village native, 40, told The Post. “It was when things looked precarious and we didn’t know if we’d get out.”

The NY Post pictures are worth looking at.

This is not good news for folks with non-New York resources.

Oh well.

Newcomers or those from away just need to be humble, respectful.

We read this piece early this morning. My sister is selling her modest condo in New York and looking to move up here next spring from New York with a very unexceptional retirement income and the timing couldn't be worse. It's really hurting her to see inventory go down 40 percent from last year in the Knox Couinty area (she wants to live near me) and prices in her range (300,000 max) going up.

Good thing the colder climate will preclude most looking at interior areas of Maine.

I wonder how many people will actually stay. There's a big difference between NYC and Maine (or just about anywhere, really). In a year or two there may be a migration in the other direction, and lower home prices.

One winter may do it.

First winter will do it back in Wyoming too with the Kali invasion.
Or maybe in Maine's favour is the state income tax

I'm kind of hoping this happens!

It's like the Hallmark Christmas movies where a city person goes home for a small town holiday, remembers his/her values and becomes a better person.

There aren't Hallmark movies where a small town person goes to Manhattan and learns how to be a bad driver with rude manners. Right?

Let's hope New Yorkers learn some manners.

There's an out migration from just about all urban areas now, with covid and civil unrest. When that's all history I just suspect many people will move back, and the housing prices in areas being flooded by people moving in now will be under pressure. If so, that will be a good time to buy.
