My first question, What kind of job? What are your job qualifications and expectations? New apartments in Ellsworth were listed at $1695 per month and have a waiting list.

I'd find a decent paying job first......within a reasonable commute to the reasonably priced apartment you'll rent.
Then stay put for a while and do some exploring. You many not get it exactly as you want it on the first go 'round, but you'll have some breathing room. Are you in Maine now?
Hopefully you have enough saved to get you through the transition.

As much as I'd love to live somewhere 'at the edge' like Fort Kent, Millinocket, Lubec, Eastport or Calais... for the next 20 years during employment-ages, I'd be restricted to within commuting distance to Kittery because of my work. So that likely puts me in a range between Sanford to Portland, and places south to Kittery. Anything 1h or less is fine. I commute 45 mins each way currently.

That leaves N. Berwick, Sanford, York, Wells, Saco-Biddeford, Scarborough, and I guess Kittery as well. Any notables missing from that list?

South Berwick is kind of a cool little town and it's got a cheaper cost of living than the seaside towns. Kittery and York are both really nice but are pretty pricey these days.
