I had the same problem with a dining fly. Instantly ruined it. I learned not to leave my new one out in the snow.

The part about professional advice is the right answer. You need to consider the material of the rafter, whether pine, spruce, engineered, etc. Also the length of the rafter, the spacing whether 16 inches on center or 2 ft, as well as the width of the rafter. Here's a link to a handy calculator. I think 40 lbs/sq ft snow load is fairly normal, but again check with a professional in the area you are planning to build in.

Maximum Span Calculator for Joists & Rafters

Are you sure about that?

Teaches me not to hurry with my response...I stand corrected, a 12/12 pitch is 45 degrees. That's what I had pictured in my head! 6/12 is just about 27 degrees. Since I looked it up...an 8/12 pitch is about 34 degrees!

If the exterior walls are starting the bulge out it's time to get the snow off.

I have a flat part of my roof. When it snowed 10 inches of wet snow last November, I got up there and shoveled it off. Ten inches is my cut off for shoeveing it off unless its dry powder. But even if it is, it could rain later, and then the 10 inches would be waterlogged.

Uh, no. 12/12 is 45 degrees. The tangent of 6/12 is 26 degrees. But I agree that the aforementioned roof is probably a 4 or 5/12 or 18 to 22 degrees.

Tangent of the angle=rise / run.
