Then you have the drunk hunters. My husband gave up hunting years ago when he met up with one in the woods. Luckily the guy was more interested in talking than shooting. Hub offered to carry his gun and emptied the clip on the ground as they were walking. This took place at 8 a.m!!! Hub has also been shot at in the past and was wearing blaze orange. We both decided hunting is not worth the headaches, no matter how much we miss venison steaks.

Good thing hubby thinks fast. Offering to carry the weapon is pretty resourceful.

This camp of theirs is near the Bangor area; I have never been there, but it seems that there would be plenty of game within easy driving distance of Bangor. They used to get plenty of deer in years gone by.

What's happening? These guys are field-and-woods hunters, they don't hang around suburban back yards. But to have seen nothing - deer or moose - sounds odd to me. They are very experienced, professional about handling firearms and knowing their backstops, and wearing the required blaze orange, as well as being on the lookout for it.

On the other hand, they are getting into their 60's and 70's...so maybe that's it!
Last winter took its toll on deer...heavy snows. The ones that are left do very well to avoid people when they need to. They know when it's hunting season.

I never understood the orange thing really. Here in AZ hardly anyone uses the blaze orange clothes and accidental shootings are rare.

Honestly I think the last time I recall someone being shot while a hunt was going on, the injured person WAS wearing orange, so it made no difference!

Just some food for thought! better safe(r) than sorry I guess!

Probably has to do with the lighting and the foliage color in ME this time of year. There's been lots of studies about visibility to the human eye. Wardens here actually have a luminosity % value to determine if it's the right orange or not.

The Maine woods are very very thick and its hard to see and distinguish between a person and a deer. Blaze orange will show up through the growth...or at least it should. I've yet to see any woods up the northern part of NM that are as dense as the Maine woods.

Sounds like a perfectly sound plan

Around here we are chasing them off the pavement.

Deer are four-footed, carry antlers, and tend to be covered with brown hair. Many will have a tail.

People are two-footed, may wear a hat, and very few of us are furry.

Although I do admit that some folk's tail is much more interesting than a deer's tail.

Are you sure about that? I've seen your profile photo.
