maureenb, I have nothing but respect for you and I hope you do not think I was being mean to you, that was not my intent, just the musings of a guy who has seen this patriot thing go all over the place in my lifetime. In my time of service it was not a popular thing to wear a uniform, nor display the flag. Thank God that is in the past, a place I chose not to dwell any longer and now the people who put it on the line for us are treated with the respect they deserve. And again, thank you for fixing that broken flag .

I put up a flag on my garage at 10:00 AM on 9/11 2001 where it stayed until 9/11 2002.
I still have the flag. It's faded and worn but it has a value to me. The flag itself was one flown over the Capitol in Washington DC. It was given to me by the Yarmouth Amvets as a replacement for a flag I had donated to a man in Falmouth who had vandals repeatedly steal or destroy his flag.
The Amvets will also take care of flags people no longer want. We get about 10 a month.

ExAirForce, I think I live in the town your talking about. (Welcome back!) Those flags were a donation from a local citizen for ( I think) the towns yearly celebration in late July, plus for the 4th. I do not know who puts them up for the summer, maybe a call to the town office will answer that.
I feel lucky they at least have a light on the one at our town office.

North Yarmouth does this too. I find no fault with it. It's much better than no flags at all. There is respect in just flying the flag.....especially in numbers. People understand that not every flag everywhere can be properly illuminated. It's a common sense thing. The flag doesn't care if it has a light on it at night and at sunrise Old Glory is there for all to see...every day. It is not disrespectful to not illuminate a flag at night in my opinion. I'm sure they were not illuminated before the invention of electricity. At least these people are flying the flag ...give them credit for that! If their heart is in the right place cut them some slack.

Default Veterans in Maine

I always tried to teach our kids respect for the flag & our country. When they were young, on Independence day for example, my wife and I would hang the flag outside our home, and we'd go out there with the kids and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Now that they are grown, I think it has 'stuck', and they look like they are trying to be patriotic citizens! I hope they do the same with their kids someday.

A question comes to mind; I've read other threads that contain references about Maine having a higher ratio of military veterans than other states. I think that's great! Anyone have an idea as to why this may be? Thanks.
