I'm looking for homes and considering some attached housing because it's pretty affordable. I've found some cute homes for sale, but I don't get it when it says "1/2 duplex". I thought a duplex already was half. Does that mean I am looking at a home that is a 1/4 plex? Or do they mean half of a duplex, not including the other side because some other dude owns it, as opposed to when the entire building is for sale?

Also, has anyone ever lived on one side of a duplex? I have in apts in the past, but that's renting. Does the person on the other side get territorial when you move in?

Thanks!

here's one I was looking at

Well, there are duplexes and there are quadraplexes. Meaning a home attached to the side and in back. My guess is that "1/2 a duplex" means that only one unit of the two are for sale.

The picture on the link you posted looks like a townhouse vs. a duplex. But I've lived in a duplex way back when... we got a long with the neighbors. No problems really. Occasionally there son, while playing ball, hit the ball in our backyard and asked to retrieve it, but other than that, no big issues...

I live in a duplex now and really have no problems with the neighbors. The only thing is that our back decks are too close and when entertaining I feel the need to keep things low key. I also grew up in a duplex in Langley Park and I don't remember having issues with any of the various renters in the unit next door. Sometimes you get noise issues as in an apartment, but only from one side of your house, not above and below, lol.
