Yeah it does if you think about it. There are many, many, many posters on these forums whose geography skills need improvement. There have been statements that TN is MidWest, along with PA and Buffalo, NY along with western NY state. Or MD is in New England.

Don't be offended (unless you're a woman ) -- this is an old tradition intended to convey respect. Many Baltimore kids from past generations were taught to call adults Mr. Ted, Mr. Bill, Miss Susan (married or not), and so forth.

I've never heard anyone from the DC region use that form of address.

Southern Maryland (which is officially considered Metro DC now) and the Eastern Shore.

I grok that Maryland was considered pretty far south when Washington DC was set up as the capital. And yes, some people have definite issues with geography. But currently it's not Southern in the contemporary sense of the word. For what it's worth I also wouldn't say that Kentucky and Missouri are in the South.

I suppose it could be said that Maryland has Southern influences and as I said earlier it was considered "southern" (small S) during the 18th Century. I think that's about all that can be said.

Kentucky is quite Southern. Not as Southern-feeling as places like Tennessee or the Carolinas, but certainly Southern nonetheless. The one exception would probably be the Cincinnati suburbs. Missouri is solidly Midwestern, though.

Maryland was in the union in the civil war not the confederacy. So if anyone was to ask me if Maryland is a true southern state I'd say no. That said Maryland isn't a true northern state either. The biggest city in Maryland looks like a northeastern city. and no Richmond doesn't look northern at all the rowhouses down there aren't connected, they have space between them.

Kentucky isn't in The South though it does have some Southern characteristics. Kentucky: it aint the North and it aint the South. It's America's taint.

As someone who lives in the West, I don't feel Maryland is a southern state at all. I remember Maryland being the first state I was ever flipped off while driving, after I was passed and cut off by the same driver, for only going 15 MPH over the speed limit on a 2 lane country road. The people were noticeably rude and in a hurry compared to what I'm used to. There were no southern accents, but some very strange sounding twang. The people at a bar we went to in Baltimore were cursing enough to make a sailor cringe and the women were not very feminine at all.

I have been to the South, Atlanta included, and it has an extremely different feel than Maryland. People, while not all friendly, were mostly pleasant and seemed to be very lighthearted. Outside of Atlanta, drivers throughout the region were very courteous. Even in the cities people seemed to move slower and would at least greet you in stores. In Maryland store owners would barely greet you or mumble some nearly inaudible greeting after I would say hello.

Maybe Maryland was Southern at one time... but, as an outsdier, I didn't see it.
