Okay, so as most of us know many of are larger population centers are not cities, but large unincorporated areas instead. If we set this fact aside, what cities and towns would you rank in terms of general importance to the state of Maryland.

My top 5 would be:
1. Baltimore
2. Bethesda
3. Columbia
4. Annapolis
5. Frederick

A few outliers would be Ellicott City, Towson, Silver Spring, Rockville, and Ocean City.

What do you guys think?

I like all of them equally but differently so this is in no order:

1. Towson
2. Bethesda
3. Frederick
4. Poolesville
5. Ocean City

I actually had to reread the OP and realized it was more of importance than personal preference. Otherwise, I think your list is rather accurate.

The only problem is Bethesda and Columbia are not cities. They are unincorporated areas that many people THINK are cities. Same goes for Towson and Silver Spring

In terms of importance...including surrounding areas.
Baltimore-Towson- Dundalk-Middle River
Columbia-Ellicott City
Rockville-Gaithersburg
Hagerstown
Salisbury-Ocean City

Now my favorite 5 cities in Maryland are
1. Cambridge
2 Easton
3. Westminster
4. Hampstead
5. Ocean City

And my least favorite
1. Baltimore City
2. Potomac
3. Bethesda
4. Wheaton
5. Langley Park-Greenbelt
I can't deal with too uppity, too yuppie, too hipster, too ghetto, or too illegal alien!

Towson and Columbia are not cities or towns. They're unincorporated.

I don't think Bethesda, Silver Spring, or Ellicott City are either so with your entire list you only have five - Baltimore, Frederick, Annapolis, Rockville, and Ocean City

I choose both incorporated and unincorporated cities/towns since there are so few incorporated cities in the state.
