I speak of what I see. The northern tier of Charles is exclusively blue, the southern part is exclusively red.

If there is an explanation for the stark divide other than "DC sprawl," specifically in-migration from PG county, I am all ears.

A lot of people don't realize that until fairly recently Calvert and St. Mary's were solidly Democratic. In fact, Calvert was so solidly Democratic that many Democratic candidates for Governor and President got more votes from the County than there were people who lived here.

When I first became involved in the 1980s Democrats in Calvert outnumbered Republicans by an 8-1 margin. That slowly got chipped away due to the unrestrained growth Calvert suffered under the then Democratic Board of Commissioners with Republicans championing controlled growth. That turned out to be a winner but it is now slipping with four out of five of the current all "Republican" County Commissioners being former Democrats (some who ran as Democrats and lost and then changed their registration) and changing a lot of the controlled growth regulations to be more liberal (read that as build it and they will come and the Hell with road, sewer and school capacities).

Sure, a similar map of Allegany County from 2000 would have shown many more precincts going for Gore in a few parts of Allegany County, specifically blue collar Cumberland. In 2020, it was literally 2 in the whole county, one high dollar precinct in Cumberland, and the area around FSU.

Again, if the blue/red divide in Charles isn't indicative of in-migration from PG, why didn't those voters turn red like the rest of Southern Maryland? Again, it seems really clear to me. Red sea, small islands of blue, like the area around PAX in St. Mary's and the precincts near the bridge in Calvert.

Charles has always been mostly Democratic. The in-migration from, primarily, Prince George's and DC is just embedding that deeper.

It was in 79 when I moved here , not much has changed on the Democratic front. The players yes but the politics , no.

So who are the modern day Republicans who live in that big red block of precincts that is contingious with red block in the other parts of Southern Maryland?

So basically, the county as a whole transitioned straight from "Southern Maryland Democrat" to "D.C. Democrat" without a transition in between towards the GOP, like what happened in Calvert and St. Mary's?

So, are those 'southern tier' red precincts the old guard Southern Marylanders? Exurban conservative commuters?

What got under your craw? I have questions about the map, and despite living there for 41 years, you want to be rude and coy rather than helpful?

Yes/no/maybe.

The recent (the last 15 years or so) influx to Charles was different than the earlier (and still occurring but at lower numbers) move to Calvert and St. Mary's, even though the starting point for all three was more or less the same.

For the latter two what you had was White Flight to a large extent (we used to joke that all the Prince George's Democrats changed their registration when they crossed the Patuxent at Wayson's Corner) while the migration to Charles has been a lot of Black Flight. There has also been a lot of people come out of DC and bypass Prince George's and go straight to Charles.

What Calvert is seeing now is an influx from Montgomery and Howard Counties with some also from Baltimore County. The impact isn't as great as previously because the growth is much, much slower. Instead of seeing 20%-30% over the ten year period it's now more like 4%, which is considered sustainable growth.
