The home we're buying in Maryland uses propane for heating, cooking, etc. and allegedly the sellers own the tank. In order to establish an account with a propane company we need to provide proof of ownership. So far, the companies the sellers say they do business with have no record of sales.

Does anyone have experience with this? We cannot do business with a propane company without proof of ownership so if the sellers fail to provide us with one what do we do?

Any thoughts, suggestions, advice appreciated--thank you.

We went through the same thing after having our house built. The company that originally put the tank in wouldn't give us a proof of ownership even though they said we own it (they just wanted us to use them and not get gas from another company), we have gotten our gas through them but I know my neighbor uses a different company. When calling the gas company just tell them that you don't have one.

To follow up, when I asked for a notarized statement of ownership sellers said they couldn't provide one because they didn't have a bill of sale for the tank. Very long story short, I finally made contact with the propane company that claims they own the tank and will work with them. They installed the tank, there is no bill of sale between the propane company and sellers.

I'm a little baffled as to why I was given three different propane companies they claimed they did business with but the companies have no records of.

I think for some reason, no one wants to take responsibility for the tank (I guess in case something happens to the tank). Like I said we had the house built and the company put the tank (filled) in and says we own the tank but wouldn't give us a bill of sale. It makes me a little Leary because if there is a problem with the tank down the road will it be a hassle to get it repaired as well.

I'm glad you found someone you can get gas from, I guess you have no excuse for not cooking dinner .

Is your tank above ground or buried? I know someone who had an buried tank and they didn't have to show proof of ownership only had to tell the propane company they owed it. They also had a above ground tank for a shop which they did not own but was rented from a company. Since companies that rent the tanks also have to remove them after the landowner doesn't want to use the company as a propane supplier it would make sense that they wouldn't want to go through the expense of removing a buried tank.
