Have rents in the Boston area come down at all? I've always heard that Arlington is a good, affordable place to live. Is renting there very expensive (as compared to NYC)? Has the job market in Boston improved? Is it hard to find something dog/cat friendly? Thanks.

Depends on what you mean by "affordable." Arlington is certainly less expensive than Boston proper. There is great public transport and you can park a car without losing your mind. Certainly cheaper than the NYC equivalent.

It is tough with pets, largely with dogs. I think a rental agent might be able to help you with pets-friendly places. A large complex is less likely to allow pets than, say, an apartment in a two-family house or something.
Overall, I think Arlington is a great place to live, renting or owning, especially Arlington Center and east towards Cambridge. I lived a block from Spy Pond for a year (great studio fort $600/month with covered parking) and I still regret not staying there longer.
Good luck.

Check out Somerville, areas like Davis Square are relatively cheap and I love the atmosphere. I've lived here for a while and, although I'm moving, it's not due to the area (I hate snow!!)
