The real issue with Andover - great town! - is that 500k is on the low end of what's there. But as a commute, if she's working on the west side of Peabody, it's a fairly nice, roughly 20 minute drive.

Middleton is a nice town as a compromise, though you may find it too rural. It doesn't have much of a downtown of its own - it's more a central point for bouncing to enjoy the downtowns of the surrounding towns (like Andover).

If she's working over towards Salem I'd lean towards Swampscott or Beverly.
She will be right by 128/ Boston Children's hospital

Melrose is really trending up with young families. Overall, you will get the most house for the money in the North of Boston towns. I would put Melrose at the top of your list, with Wakefield and Danvers as backup towns.

Well, me for one... I have a bunch of friends and former co workers that are married and looking to buy their first places and many are looking at Melrose as they've been priced out of where they rent (Somerville and Cambridge mostly).

You guys have been VERY helpful!
I will heed many of your suggestions when speaking to our realtor to formulate our house hunting plan for the weekend..

any quirks/oddities/general weird Boston area stuff I need to know so I don't flip out when I get there?

i too saw this as a trend with the parents at daycare. daycare was in beacon hill and families lived nearby/in cambridge. a bunch were all looking in Melrose. It does seem like a new "hot" place to go for young families. I had never even heard of the town until then.

I just knew it as the place on the other side of Malden, but often got them confused, haha.

Well, nothing is laid out in a grid.

Avoid driving in the city if you can.

Don't expect street name signs.

Haymarket is NOT a farmers market despite what some people who aren't from here will call it.

Don't confuse droll New England mannerisms with unfriendliness.

Oil heat. Now *THAT* is a fun one.

A two car attached garage is pretty much a luxury item around here.

Anything built after 1945 is "newer".

No liquor in most grocery stores.
