I like making guacamole but it seems that there are no good sources for decent avocados.
So today I figured I'd buy organic maybe it might be better. Even soaked them in water for a few hours. Nope. Out of three possibly one and a half were good. Couldn't mash them either. They were from Peru from all places.
I always buy Hass Avocados. Stop and Shop or Whole Foods are my preferred stores for avocados. I am a MB fan but have never got a good avocado there. Weird.
I got a different kind of avocado a few months ago and it was softer and kept longer. It had a different name. I think I got it in Shaw's, maybe Market Basket but I've never seen them there again. Of course I don't know what a "real" one would taste like either.
mdovell: Do you live near Russo's in Watertown? I've never been disappointed with anything I purchased there. I remember their freshly made guacamole was the best I've had outside of a Mexican restaurant.
I'm another one who buys Haas avocados at Stop & Shop. Right now they're about $1 each and I let them ripen for a couple of days before I use them. (Make sure the ones you get are slightly soft when you squeeze them.) They're pretty good, but not great compared to what you can get on the west coast.
Eating an avocado in California is a completely different experience from here; I used to spend a lot of time in San Francisco and was amazed by the local produce. The ones I find at S&S are imported from Peru.
I second Hass avocados from Shaws/S&S/etc but make sure you give them time to ripen. it's pretty rare you will find them ripe in the store, but they ripen well.
