Thanks all! I am not opposed to taking the commuter rail but would like to keep the time to ~30-40 minutes if possible. I guess I hadn't realized the red line from Braintree to Boston is 30 minutes, and Braintree is a bit pricier than towns that are further out (we originally wanted Braintree because we thought the commute would be much faster). I guess that opens up other options like Canton afterall. I don't know much about that town, but I'll do some looking into it. We are looking for a nice mix of a town-feel with but not as rural feeling as say, Sharon. We DID like the feel of Braintree, but I think we can pay less for the same home if we go a bit further out. Thanks again for all your input!

It's very hard to get a true 30 minute door to door commute. Your office and house would literally have to be next door to or across the street from a train station and everything would have to run on time. Most people I work with spend at least an hour commuting door to door.

The biggest drawbacks to commuter rail are price and flexibility. Off peak frequencies are horrible on the commuter rail.

Good point Dm84, I guess I should have clarified that I meant 30-40 minutes on the train or T would be ideal. I can't avoid the additional time from home to the station but my job is very close to South station, so that helps a bit. I would probably have to live in Boston proper to get a true 30 minute door-to-door commute I guess. Thanks again!

Why not look in Quincy? Prices seem to be fairly reasonable, and you would 1 to 4 stops closer to downtown on the red line, depending on where in Quincy.

Where is your destination in the morning? If it's in the financial district, then staying along the red line makes sense.

There is also the commuter boat from Hingham or Hull. The boats are reliable and fast, and ideal if you work close to the waterfront downtown.

I would do Quincy as well. There are a lot of 2 families in the Quincy area and then you can walk to the red line most likely.
