Folks: I have accepted a job in Chelmsford, which I start tomorrow. We currently live in the Hartford, CT area, and my new company has given us up to a year to relocate. I will be doing the temp living thing on my own for a few months, but it's not too early to start thinking about some potential towns to target.
Neighborhoods with sidewalks & street lights. What I mean by this--maybe more of a mature suburban feel...for those familiar with it, we live in West Hartford which fits the bill
Schools--decent but less important (child will be off in college)
Budget--this is the big question. We are currently in a 2700 sq ft colonial estimated <$500K, but willing to downsize given our situation. I'm guessing we'll need to look up to $800K, but unsure. OK if the house is old, but ideally updated throughout
Commute--30-40 min (ideally in a "reverse" direction)
Chelmsford itself or neighboring Westford check most of your requirements. Even the Belvidere section of Lowell may be worth considering as empty nesters.

Belvedere section is a great suggestion. Despite the stigma around Lowell, I lived there for a year leaving my car unlocked and valuables out without issue. The belvedere neighborhood is incredibly safe, neighborly, and has some of the best housing stock at sub-500k prices.
I agree that both Chelmsford and Westford are great choices.
