Folks: I have accepted a job in Chelmsford, which I start tomorrow. We currently live in the Hartford, CT area, and my new company has given us up to a year to relocate. I will be doing the temp living thing on my own for a few months, but it's not too early to start thinking about some potential towns to target.

Criteria:
  • Convenience to shopping (e.g. Whole Foods / Trader Joe's) & doctor's offices
  • Neighborhoods with sidewalks & street lights. What I mean by this--maybe more of a mature suburban feel...for those familiar with it, we live in West Hartford which fits the bill
  • Schools--decent but less important (child will be off in college)
  • Budget--this is the big question. We are currently in a 2700 sq ft colonial estimated <$500K, but willing to downsize given our situation. I'm guessing we'll need to look up to $800K, but unsure. OK if the house is old, but ideally updated throughout
  • Commute--30-40 min (ideally in a "reverse" direction)
  • No well or septic

Thanks in advance!

Chelmsford itself or neighboring Westford check most of your requirements. Even the Belvidere section of Lowell may be worth considering as empty nesters.

Belvedere section is a great suggestion. Despite the stigma around Lowell, I lived there for a year leaving my car unlocked and valuables out without issue. The belvedere neighborhood is incredibly safe, neighborly, and has some of the best housing stock at sub-500k prices.

Thank you both for the inputs. Just started the job yesterday, and trying to get a feel for the area and commuting times.

If I had a job in Chemlsford, I'd live there. I like that town.

I agree that both Chelmsford and Westford are great choices.
