My son is trying to find a safe, clean, reasonable (?) apt for the next two years starting this Fall. He lives out of town and would appreciate any suggestions that would be close to the transit system. There are plenty listed online but requesting recommendations.
Thanks!

It would help if you said how much he is willing to pay per month for rent.

He will want to be close to the Red Line subway. Cambridge and Somerville are the places to look. Beacon Hill Boston would work too if he can afford it.

After looking on Zillow and Apts.com, it looks like he'll have to pay at least 2K-2500. It's just so hard to know anything about an area, no one has been to. I offered to try to help since he's working and taking online classes now. Thanks

I would recommend looking at the Harvard or MIT housing facebook group. Lots of people looking for roommates there or looking to sublet or finding somebody to take over their lease there. Does your son need to be on campus all the time (like have lab access or something)? That might affect how close he wants to be from campus. Agree that being on the red line (MIT's stop is Kendall/MIT) would be much easier for him.

Most college students and young professionals in Boston share apartments with roommates.

That's about standard for a 1bedroom. As others have said, he can try looking for roommates which is what most people do. The Harvard or the MIT Facebook Groups are good suggestions as many peers will be seeking roommates. Craigslist has plenty of "roommate wanted" ads too.

But if your son needs to live alone, then $2-2.5k is about right. Anywhere in Cambridge would be fine/safe, but closer to the Red Line would be better (Porter, Harvard, Central, Kendall - Alewife is fine, but a bit further away from campus). Somerville would work too - particularly the Davis Square area. Beacon Hill in Boston is very nice - easy access to MIT via the Red Line (or on foot) and essentially on the edge of downtown Boston. Really, any neighborhood along the Red Line between Alewife and Charles/MGH will be safe enough and provide good access to MIT.

I completely second the MIT housing group on Facebook.
It has the added benefit that you're likely to be connected to other MIT students as roommates. The offered housing neighborhoods will also fit the typical lifestyle of MIT students. For example, the seaport district is nice, but really suited for professionals. West Cambridge has a much higher concentration of families and older demographic

All the above suggestions are good ones... Is your son a graduate student or upperclassman? I'm guessing MIT frosh and sophomores would be required to live on campus ... at least out-of-town freshmen.
