The people in pajamas and slippers might want to consider wearing running shoes when shopping at the Market Basket in New Bedford.

Man apparently stabbed in New Bedford

Note that three weeks ago, a man was shot to death right around the corner from this location.

I was at the New Bedford Market Basket today. I've never once felt threatened there. I recall getting panhandled once. There's usually a beggar at the light exiting the plaza opposite the I-195 Eastbound onramp/offramp. I've never once seen them do anything aggressive.

Well I would definitely start watching your "six" around there. This is not a neighborhood to mess around with, Geoff. The Tallman St. shooting was definitely gang related, as was the shooting of the undercover detective.

North Front St. is the most problematic spot in that area and it has been for a while. There was a major Latin Kings drug raid there several years ago, and it's always had a history of gang activity. But does someone who is heading to Market Basket for groceries via 195 or someone heading to Antonio's for a Portuguese meal have too much to worry about? Probably not.

Please don't act like it's miles away. A person was just stabbed right behind the store.

Who said anything about it being far away? It's right there. In fact, there was another Latin Kings raid several years ago on Sawyer St which runs right by MB. The point was that in spite of the adjacent rough spot (which has been rough for as long as I can remember), Market Basket isn't a particularly dangerous place to be. It's not as if gang members are all of a sudden targeting suburbanites on their grocery runs.

This is gang territory in the 3rd most dangerous city in Massachusetts.

There are plenty of other grocery stores one can shop at - including other Market Baskets.

So good thing anyone shopping at Market Basket doesn't go behind the store. I normally park between the store and the newly constructed Starbucks. Since the store opened, I've been approached by exactly one panhandler begging for money.

The neighborhood on the rear side of Market Basket has been rough since long before store opened in 2010. Market Basket has direct highway access for people coming from/heading to 195 West and easy highway access for people heading to/coming from 195 East. While unfortunate, the crime near the store is not new or surprising to anyone who frequents Market Basket. Nor has it been a deterrent over the 13 years the store has been in existence which is obvious if you've ever tried to find parking there on a Saturday.

I didn't remember the store being open quite that long. October 2010. I had moved back to my home town that Memorial Day. I only had four-ish months of Market Basket purgatory.
