Considering a move to Amherst, MA. We're a couple with one child, nearing middle school age. I would prefer an "in town" location, where I don't have to get in my car every time I need a quart of milk, the newspaper, or a cup of coffee. We'd be looking for a small house or condo/townhouse. Are there decent places near the middle of town, or is this hard to find?

I can't say how hard it would be to find an "in town" house or condo in Amherst, but they do exist. At the far end of Main Street, I believe they have some condos. I've never priced these so can't provide any costs or availability.

And even up in North Amherst, several miles from the centre of town, you can find a store within walking distance for a quart of milk and a place to buy fresh cheese, eggs and other dairy. However, the area is definitely car-centric. The large super-markets and small box stores are all within five miles on Rte 9.

If you are close to the town square, you'll find within a few block radius bookstores, several good cafes for excellent coffee, hair-stylists, clothing shops, groceries, and a fabulous wine shop.
