Isn't it 6.25%? It is a 25% increase from 5.0% to 6.25%. I guess it will be felt mostly on large purchases such as a car. If you buy an $18,000 car, the sales tax will go from $900 to $1,125.

We all knew this was going to be approved and is far from the last tax we will be hit with. So more people will shop in NH and they will realize some of the larger items aren't being bought here, they will say they have to find another way to tax us.
By the way...anyone know when the 6.25% sales tax is supposed to start?

with the gas prices around $2.8 and considering the best places to shop in NH to get distance from lets say Boston, has anyone figured out what the price of the item(s) you are going to buy should be so that it really makes sense to go to NH ?

samsalmanu,
It all depends on where you live, your car's gas mileage, etc. There are two large malls on the MA/NH border - one in Nashua, the other in Salem NH. Let's say you are 40 miles away and your car gets 20 mpg. The cost of going back and forth is $11.20. The breakeven is buying $179 worth of taxable products. There are a few other items you may want to pick up in NH - beer, liquor, tobacco products, etc. MA does tax clothing above $175 so if you have something expensive to buy, that may make sense.
So, it is worth it if you have something expensive to guy: computer, digital SLR, lawn mower, etc.

I bought my first Mac in Nashua in 1987. It was worth more than the beater car I brought it home in.
I gather a big change in Mass. is that liquor will now be taxed, according to a besotted co-worker. I guess it hasn't been before?
I live about 20 miles from the shopping strip of Daniel Webster Highway. Since I don't really shop much at all, I don't come up to NH to do it, but if I was buying anything significant, probably I'd come up.
